On a clear day you can’t help but marvel at the view across Central Crater to Red Crater and on to the conical-shaped Mount Ngauruhoe volcano. This spectacular view is seen best from near to the rim of Blue Lake.

The view also shows the steep descent of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing down the side of Red Crater and the track’s passage across the edge of Central Crater. Furthermore, a distinctive black lava flow is evident over a sizeable part of Central Crater. This lava flow came from Red Crater 1800 years ago.
