The memorial site, inaugurated in 1999, commemorates the Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the Wehrmacht general Friedrich von Rabenau and the Wehrmacht captain Ludwig Gehre, who were held captive as “special prisoners” of the Reich Security Main Office in a cellar of an SS barracks.
They were arrested for their participation in the conspiracy against Hitler, which led to the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944. In the basement of the barracks they spent the last weeks before their execution on April 9, 1945 in the Flossenbürg concentration camp.
