Most beautiful wine view 2016 in the Palatinate with a view of the Wachtenburg
March 6, 2024
Located on the outskirts of Wachenheim, the "Most Beautiful Wine View" offers a view of the Wachtenburg castle ruins - the landmark of the traditional wine and sparkling wine town on the German Wine Route. The Wachtenburg, which consists of an upper core complex and the younger lower castle, is said to have been built as early as the 12th century. The rectangular keep served as a residential and defensive building. The upper castle was surrounded by a ring wall with five towers, the easternmost of these towers is particularly worth seeing. During the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689, the Wachtenburg was largely destroyed. The "Most Beautiful Wine View" is on the "Rieslingtour" circular hiking trail and only a short detour from the "Pfälzer Weinsteig" long-distance hiking trail and the "Deutsche Weinstraße" hiking trail.

—> Riesling tour
The Riesling tour is 7.5 km long and leads from the wine route window via the Mundhardter Hof up to the Wachtenburg castle ruins. There you have a wonderful view of the Rhine plain and the castle tavern invites you to take a break with Palatinate specialties.
On the way back you walk through the Wachenheim vineyards of Schlossberg and Altenburg - past the most beautiful wine view - to the market square
with the Simultankirche St. Georg,
the Ludwigskapelle
and the market fountain.
Then follow the wine route back to the starting point."Viewpoints that guarantee impressive views of the German wine culture landscapes and are also easy to reach for hikers or by bike are awarded the 'most beautiful wine view'. They create new wine tourism destinations in the growing areas that invite you to visit the wine regions and enjoy the wines where they grow," explained DWI Managing Director Monika Reule.
