The roe deer is one of the forest animals to be discovered on the Forest and Adventure Trail.Roe deer:
The roe deer is the most common and smallest species of deer in Europe.
The roe deer originally inhabited forest edge zones and clearings. It now also occurs in open and almost coverless agricultural steppe. Roe deer are ruminants and are called selectors because they prefer to eat protein-rich forage. During the summer months, roe deer live predominantly alone or in small groups consisting of a female (doe) and her young (fawns). In winter, small herds, usually consisting of more than three or four animals, form. Roe deer living in open agricultural landscapes form herds of more than twenty animals.
The roe deer was selected as Animal of the Year in 2019 by the German Wildlife Foundation.
