The opera house was built between 1875 and 1884 and financed by the city of Budapest and Emperor Franz Joseph I. The Hungarian Royal Opera House, as it was then called, was ceremoniously opened on September 27, 1884. The building is richly decorated with Baroque elements, numerous ornaments, paintings and sculptures. Particularly noteworthy are the murals in staircases and the auditorium of the opera, which were made by Bertalan Székely, Mór Than and Károly Lotz. The Budapest Opera is considered one of the masterpieces of Miklós Ybl and one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world.
