Here you can go into the water, lie on the beach, watch the ships, relax, and so on. It's like being at the seaside – without paying a tourist tax!

Watch big pots and listen to the sound of the waves. Almost as beautiful as a day at the sea.

It doesn't always have to be a trip to the North or Baltic Sea: If you long for sand under your feet and a cool breeze, Hamburg's Elbe beach is the perfect place for you.
A special feature of Hamburg is that, despite being a big city, you have the beach right on your doorstep. The Elbe beach stretches around 13 kilometers downstream towards the mouth of the Elbe with a view of the harbor. In many sections you can comfortably lie down on the sand and let the large container ships go by. And it's not just the people of Hamburg who love their Elbe beach, the contrast between relaxation and industry is also inspiring internationally:
In 2017, the New York Times newspaper named the Elbe beach one of the ten favorite places on the water in Europe. The beach sections can be reached by public transport such as the harbor ferries (HVV information) and on foot or by bike via the Elbe hiking trail.
In general: The Elbe is not designated bathing water. The strong currents are treacherous in many sections and are exacerbated by ship traffic. Therefore, you should just stick to sunbathing.
Between the Hans-Leip-Ufer and the Blankenese city beach, below the extensive Jenischpark, lies the Teufelsbrück ferry pier. From there you can reach a small section of beach, which is rather rocky, but promises a lot of peace and quiet a little further away from the hustle and bustle. You can also combine the beach trip with a trip to the beautiful district of Nienstedten with its large deer park, where you can observe fallow deer and waterfowl, among other things.
