Originally the garden was created in the 18th century under Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel to the associated forester's lodge. Bearing in mind these historic references, the perennial garden was restored in 2006.

The perennial garden is the former kitchen garden of the Bad Hersfeld head forest company. After the dissolution of the monastery, the land built in 1574 with the abbey's guest house fell to the landgrave. It soon became the home of the forest workers.
The garden was redesigned in 2006 by the city of Bad Hersfeld.
