In the Middle Ages, the town wall around the monastery and town of Hersfeld was almost 2.5 km long. Numerous gates and towers once flanked strategic areas. Some of the towers have survived only as fragments and a few completely. One of them is the round powder tower made of rubble masonry. Today it is isolated, the inner city wall has disappeared in this area. At a height of approx. 6 m, the starting points of the wall can still be guessed at. The tower was used to store gunpowder.
