Santa Maria in Cosmedin is a basilica in Rome, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is one of the few examples of Romanesque architecture in the city. The church was built in the 6th century on the site of an ancient temple of Hercules, and was later expanded and restored in the 8th and 12th centuries. The church has a beautiful interior with frescoes, paintings and relics. In the narthex of the church is the famous Bocca della Verità, a marble disk with a face that, according to legend, would bite off the hand of any liar who touches it
