Hiking

This is a low-lying alluvial plain. The silt became enriched with organic elements, forming peat, which was then mined for fuel. This led to the formation of the characteristic ponds. This entire area of the Vlassenbroekpolder was studied as part of the new Sigma Plan (protecting the population from extremely high water levels). A Scheldt or ring dike will be built along Broekstraat at a Sigma height of 8.00 m (above sea level). The tides will have more free rein in the northern part of the polder. However, all the houses in Vlassenbroek will be preserved.
