In 1859, the first "Central Station" was opened at this point, together with the cathedral bridge, which created a connection of left and right Rhine routes. In 1894, the station was significantly expanded and built on the old foundation, a new platform hall.

From 1953, the station was built in its present form. The modern reception building was opened in 1957. In the 1970s and 1990s, the entire system was further expanded, renovated and modernized.
