Beautiful bridge that you cross on the way to the chocolate museum.

The construction of the earth dam in 1844-1846 presented new challenges for the remaining flow. In order to connect the island to the western mainland and at the same time ensure shipping, the old, rigid wooden bridge had to make way for a lifting bridge. In 1863, this was replaced by a wooden swing bridge that could be opened and closed manually. As industrialization progressed, the volume of traffic in Malchow increased and the bridge could no longer cope with the changed conditions. In December 1912, it was replaced by a steel structure that could accommodate two carts side by side. It was operated with a hand crank until it was destroyed in 1945. A new swing bridge was not built until 1948/49. In the meantime, traffic was ensured via a temporary bridge resting on a barge. First operated by an electric motor, the bridge gradually deteriorated by 1980. After being closed for ten years, a swing bridge was built again between 1989 and 1991. In September 2012, work began on the complete renovation of the swing bridge and the foundations. After almost a year of construction, the project was completed.
