Founded during the Song Dynasty around 1200 the town is looking back on over 800 years of history. A museum in Yangxian Hall at the northeastern end of the old street provides an insight into the towns history. Along the old street a number of old houses have been restored and are open to the public.

Gaoqiao Old Town dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty, around 1200. It is an old water town south of the Yangtze River. The Gaoqiao History and Culture Exhibition Hall, housed in the Yangxian Hall at the northeastern end of the old street has a couple of hundred, mostly local exhibits, on display. There are also a number of old houses that have been restored and are mostly open for visit, such as Zhong's house, Du Yuesheng's ancestral hall, Huang's house, Jingye Hall, Yangxian Hall.
