The garden was built as early as the Ming Dynasty (1559-1577). It shows the Chinese art of gardening. It's very crowded on weekends. Anyone in Shanghai should pay a visit to the garden.

The Yu Garden was built in 1559 by Pān Yǔnduān (潘 允 端), a senior Ming dynasty official, as a private garden for his father in an area of two hectares.
During the First Opium War, the Taiping Uprising and during the Second Japanese-Chinese War, the parks were damaged. In the late 1950s, the garden was renovated and the park was opened to the public in 1961. The garden has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China in Shanghai since 1982.

This park offers secluded retreats. You can also stay here for several hours and watch the goings-on.
