The Ekkehard fountain stands on the square in front of the church entrance. It is dedicated to "Echartus II", one of the twelve founders of Naumburg Cathedral. Ekkehard (985 to 1046) from the noble Ekkehardine family was count in the Chutizi district and in the Teuchern castle ward. He was margrave of Lusatia and margrave of Meissen. The influence of the margrave was so strong due to the politically and militarily strategically important area that the Ekkehardine family became the closest advisors to the emperors and princes. Ekkehard II was married to Uta von Ballenstedt. He and his wife are among the twelve founders of Naumburg Cathedral. The couple's marriage remained childless, so the Ekkehardine family ended with Ekkehard II.
