The University of Music is the most distinctive building on the Platz der Freiheit (formerly Fürstenplatz). It has served as a higher education institution since 1951. It was originally built as a state administration building, was temporarily a provisional prince's residence and from 1848 served as the parliament building of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach and from 1920 of the state of Thuringia.
