Amundsen's bust stands directly on the spot where he set off on his last, fatal seaplane flight. He wanted to save the Italian polar explorer Nobile.
Amundsen crashed - the few remains that were found of his plane can be seen next door in the Polar Museum.

A bust of Roald Amundsen, the renowned Norwegian explorer, is prominently displayed outside the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies building on Castray Esplanade in Hobart. Originally crafted in plaster by Victor Lewis during Amundsen's visit to Seattle in 1921, multiple casts were created for Einar Sverre Pedersen.

One of these casts found its way to Hobart in 1988. In 2014, the bust was relocated to the new IMAS building, where it stands as a tribute to Amundsen's contributions to polar exploration.

The sculpture serves as a tangible link to the past, commemorating the legacy of a pioneering figure in the realm of Antarctic and marine studies.

Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (born July 16, 1872 in Borge, Norway; † probably June 18, 1928 near Bear Island) was a Norwegian sailor and polar explorer and is considered one of the most successful explorers in the Arctic and Antarctic. He was the first person to sail through the Northwest Passage and, with four companions, was the first to reach the geographical South Pole. He is also one of the first people to reach the geographic North Pole.
