The city scale in was once the location of the city scale. The facility was necessary to protect customers from fraudsters and to be able to determine taxes and duties. It was built by Lüder von Bentheim in 1587/88. It has been a listed building since 1973.

"Magnificent Renaissance façade built by Lüder von Bentheim in 1586/88, rebuilt after the war by the Sparkasse Bremen. Home of the Günther Grass Foundation and the German Chamber Philharmonic Bremen.
The former municipal scales from 1587 were suddenly destroyed in the 137th air raid on Bremen on October 6, 1944. Lüder von Bentheim's city scales burned down completely, the upper part of the magnificent gable collapsed, the transverse structure at the back was completely destroyed - only a U-shaped ruin remained.
The subsequent years of struggle for this building, which is important in terms of art history and the city's history, ended in 1959 when the Sparkasse Bremen - as the monument conservator Rudolf Stein put it - decided as a "lifesaver at the very last minute" to preserve the city scales for the people of Bremen.
In order to be able to rebuild the old scales as a monument to Bremen's merchant spirit, the savings bank assumed the costs of the extensive reconstruction work.
Since 2000, the Stadtwaage cultural center has housed the German Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Bremen. " Source: bremen-tourismus.de/de/7afc16c3-210f-3aa4-3654-99e41d3f21ae
