According to history, Don Joaquín de Colmenares used this street to exploit people's fears and collect money. In the end he was exposed and is said to have said during the 1960 earthquake: “That he was in the special purgatory of his sins”. Hence the name Calle Purgatorio which translates to “Purgatory Street”.
