It was originally called “Dirty Street” (Calle Sucia) by the residents of Cusco during the Viceroyalty times because the vendors of the Plaza Mayor market, with their respective beasts of burden (mules and llamas), made this street a dirty street. To solve the problem, common tasks were carried out to sweep and leave them clean. To hide this ugly past, a trick was used and the name was changed from "Calle Sucia" to "Calle Suecia" (Sweden Street).
