The Scheuelberg was included in the Eppingen Lines for strategic reasons. The northern slope of the Scheuelberg was covered with hedges (a structure made of branches), and a rampart was not built.
Here, on the western summit, there was a chartaque (watchtower). The 6x6m floor plan and the ditch surrounding the chartaque have been preserved. The chartaque, which was used to observe the area in front of it, were equipped with alarm cannons and devices for fire signals in order to be able to signal any attacks.
At the west and east ends of the Scheuelberg, the ditch is deeper and the rampart is higher than normal. Gun emplacements were located here to secure the northern slope of the mountain, which was only covered with hedges.
