  • The Schafberg belongs to the Balingen Mountains and is located in the northernmost part of the Upper Danube Nature Park. It is surrounded by the villages of Roßwangen, Weilstetten (both districts of Balingen), Tieringen (district of Meßstetten) and Hausen am Tann. Neighboring mountains are the Plettenberg (1001.7 m) and the Lochenstein 963.6 m, with them it is connected via a narrow saddle.
Like the Plettenberg, the Schafberg is also a mountain range with several secondary peaks, including Hoher Fels (996.5 m), Gespaltener Fels (999.3 m) and Wenzelstein 954.4 m, on which there is a castle ruin. The high plateau is mainly forested with spruce, mountain pine, sycamore maple and limestone beech, there are also forest-free areas with the typical limestone mountain meadows and juniper heaths. The latter arose from the sheep farm, which has played an important role on the Schafberg for centuries and to which it probably owes its name. The high plateau drops steeply and rocky on almost all sides. An original natural landscape has been preserved in the rocky area. Plants that have become rare, such as hawkweed, rock hunger flowers or rue, find their optimal habitat here. It is essential to stay on the paths and trails so that the wonderful flora and fauna are not destroyed. 🤩👍
