Opinions about the origin of the Landreitgraben appear to differ. Some see it of Celtic origin, but it is more likely that the ravine originated in the Middle Ages.

The Landreitgraben, Landwehr and Landgraben are border marking or border security works and enclosures of settlement areas. These protective systems mostly date from the high and late Middle Ages and were built to protect the population or the territory from attacks by enemies in feuds or wars. In some cases the trenches were up to 100 kilometers long. Similar earthworks were already mentioned in antiquity. The Limes or the Danewerk are forms of a Landwehr. A basic distinction is made between dry and irrigated systems. Horsemen could ride through the dry trenches. The irrigated trenches were filled with water by draining a river. In some regions, land forces (especially in forest areas) are still preserved and protected as ground monuments. Source: Text information board
