In designing this monument, the artist did not follow the often-seen classical representation—the figure standing majestically on a pedestal or even riding a horse in a sublime pose. Completely relaxed, the statue leans against the rubble stone wall that separates the sidewalk from the private property, giving the impression of being the next-door neighbor. He has propped himself up with his arms. Carl Schmachtenberg (1848 to 1933) seems to be eagerly waiting for a passerby to come along and strike up a conversation. A beautiful idea, well executed!
