There is a rustic brewery with a beer garden in front of the city wall in summer.

      Design and history
The first massive city wall in Riga was mentioned in documents in 1207. Before that, there were supposedly 3.50 meter high palisades. Over the course of the city's history, the fortifications were repeatedly extended. In the 14th century, it was already 2,200 meters long and reached a height of up to 13 meters. There were up to 29 towers, which were arranged at a distance of about 70 meters from each other. The distance corresponded to the range of an arrow. Of the towers, only the Ramer Tower and the Powder Tower remain today. There are also several towers integrated into newer buildings. Originally, there were eight city gates in the wall. Of these, only the Swedish Gate has survived to this day.

The remains of Riga's old city walls offer a fascinating insight into the city's history. Walking along the well-preserved red brick wall, you can almost feel how medieval Riga was once defended against attackers here. The thick walls and old loopholes are a reminder that Riga was an important trading and fortress city in earlier times.

I find the small details particularly interesting, such as the old cannons and the hidden passageways in the wall, which make you feel like you are traveling through time. The contrast between the renovated sections and the old, partly worn stones brings out the history of this city wall even more. It's not hard to imagine how guards once patrolled here and observed the goings-on within the city.

A tip: also walk through the smaller archways to discover the winding alleys and hidden courtyards. Here you can often find charming cafes and small shops that are off the tourist trail. Especially when the weather is good, it is worth continuing the stroll at a leisurely pace and taking in the atmosphere of this historic district.
