    Vienna Museum, Karlsplatz, Vienna
    The day before yesterday
The Vienna Museum was founded in 1887 as the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna and opened a year later in the recently completed new Vienna City Hall with its first exhibition collection. Originating from the holdings of the Civil Armory with its weapons, armor and trophies, the city's collections continued to grow, so that shortly after the museum opened, initial efforts were made to build its own building. Numerous projects by well-known architects failed. These included Otto Wagner's prominent designs for the current site of the Vienna Museum, the facade of which was erected in its original size on a trial basis. Less well known are the plans by Karl Hoffmann and Emil Tranquillini, whose competition design for a city museum on the Schmelz was intended for implementation, but was prevented by the outbreak of the First World War.
    Today
The design by Certov, Winkler+Ruck Architekten emerged as the winner of the international architecture competition announced in 2015. The architectural concept was convincing thanks to a striking extension made of glass and reinforced concrete that grows out of the old building without putting a strain on it. At the same time, the listed building with its many details from the 1950s was renovated to a high standard. In the course of the renovation, the museum was equipped with contemporary rooms for exhibitions, events, education and catering, and the museum forecourt was upgraded and opened up to Karlplatz. The building was closed in 2019. The reopening was celebrated on December 6, 2023 under the direction of Matti Bunzl and Christina Schwarz. The new Wien Museum is a place of wonder, talking and learning - an open space for dialogue and a democratic salon in the center of the city.

After several years of renovation and expansion, the Vienna Museum on Karlsplatz shines in breathtaking splendor. The city's history is being told in a completely new way in this museum of the future. For the first time in Vienna with a permanent exhibition that is accessible free of charge.

The reopened Vienna Museum is a completely renovated and expanded building that documents the fascinating history of Vienna from early times to the present day. A state-of-the-art museum in which many original elements have been preserved. The building on Vienna's Karlsplatz was once designed by the famous architect Oswald Haerdtl, a former employee of Josef Hoffmann, and opened in 1959. However, it was bursting at the seams and was in need of renovation.

So the listed museum was completely modernized and an upper floor was added. A cube made of exposed concrete, in which the special exhibitions are shown, now "floats" above the original building. The net usable area was almost doubled. An open space was created between the old and new buildings, which is used as a terrace floor. It offers spectacular views of Karlsplatz and the surrounding area. A café, an event center and educational studios are located on this floor. The entrance area of the museum was supplemented by a glass pavilion that welcomes visitors like an outstretched hand.

With its unique collection of top-class works of art and historical exhibits, the Vienna Museum offers exciting insights into the city's history from the Neolithic period to the present day. The newly designed permanent exhibition "Vienna. My History" extends over three floors, 3,300 square meters and includes 1,700 objects. And it is a first: following the example of British state museums, it is accessible to all visitors free of charge. The Vienna Museum is the first public museum in Austria to take this path. In addition, numerous free programs are offered for students, children and families.
