The Volkstheater was opened in 1889 as a bourgeois counterpart to today's Burgtheater. Today, with 830 seats, it is one of the largest theaters in the German-speaking world. After a complete general renovation, the Volkstheater opened in May 2021 as the most modern theater in Austria under the new management of Kay Voges.
