The Lessing Memorial on Judenplatz in Vienna honors the important German poet and thinker Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781). The memorial was created by the sculptor Siegfried Charoux and shows Lessing in a pensive pose. Its positioning on Judenplatz is reminiscent of Lessing's commitment to Jewish emancipation and his famous Enlightenment dramas such as "Nathan the Wise," which advocated humanity and tolerance.
