The Rothenburg prison was located in the Büttelhaus until the 18th century. Today the city archive is housed here, which houses many documents from Rothenburg's history.

The city archives in the former Büttelhaus store archive material from the imperial city period from 1241 and the Bavarian period from 1802/03.

Since the late Middle Ages, there is evidence of an Imperial City archive. Around 1700 the existing archive was reorganized by Johann Adam Arhardt. From 1803 to around 1810, large parts of the archive holdings were handed over to the state (Reichsarchiv, later the main state archive in Munich, the district archive, later the main archive in Nuremberg).

In the 19th century, what remained was neglected until it was reorganized in 1884/85. Until he moved to his own house (the Büttelhaus - former prison), the archive was housed in the town hall.

It has been managed full-time since 1997.

Always worth a visit. Beautiful photo opportunities. Rarely to find such a well-preserved old town. Please take care...
