The city café, housed in a former fire station on Behringstrasse in Ottensen, was designed by the Hamburg designer Jule Beck based on models and with the creative advice of Friedensreich Hundertwasser in his typical style. There were no straight lines or right angles on the facades and the interior design of the guest room; the buildings followed organic shapes and were colorfully decorated with ceramic shards.

The café was closed in 2009 due to its dilapidation, and the building was largely demolished in 2013 with the plan to build a new, multi-story residential building on this site.[1] After protests from a citizens' initiative, a compromise was reached to preserve the facade and integrate it into the new building and to reinstall the café on the ground floor true to the original. The reopening took place in July 2015. The café was renamed in May 2018 and has been called Behrings ever since. On January 1, 2019, the Behrings in Ottensen was closed. A daycare center will be located here in 2023
