The Köhlbrand staircase leads down the Geest slope to the Holzhafen, Hamburg's oldest harbor basin. The monumental head structure of the bridge shows Mercury and Neptune, the gods of trade and seafaring, on two medallions. Below, in a sandstone relief, you can see Roland with a sword and crown as well as the coats of arms of Altona and Prussia, whose Köhlbrand treaties gave the staircase its name.
