The water from the peatlands is acidic and contains few minerals. This significantly limits the development of aquatic life in the streams; fish and flowering plants are absent. A few algae and mosses, as well as some small invertebrates, can survive in the water. The water also carries away plant-based organic compounds (saponins and unsaturated fatty acids), which form foam when the water moves. The "oil film" on parts of the soil is also biological and does not indicate environmental pollution.
