The church chronicle of Emmelshausen recounts that Saint Wendelin, the shepherd and farmer saint, came to this area with his flock and an assistant suffering from an eye ailment. On a hot summer day, they found themselves in dire straits due to a lack of water. Then, the Virgin Mary appeared to him in a dream and caused the spring to gush forth.

Through the missionary work of the Sacred Heart Fathers after the First World War (1918), the pilgrimage site was gradually transformed into a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The statue of the Virgin Mary was crafted in 1955 by the Mettler woodcarving workshop in Morbach. The side figures are Saint Wendelin and Saint Thaddeus.

The stone plaques bearing expressions of thanksgiving attest to the veneration of Mary.
