Hadrian’s Cycleway is a long-distance cycle route of approximately 280 kilometers that follows Emperor Hadrian’s Wall, from Ravenglass on the west coast to South Shields on the east coast of England. The route winds through the rugged landscape of Cumbria and Northumberland, passing Roman forts, coastlines, hills, and picturesque villages. Cyclists are immersed in both natural beauty and ancient history, with highlights such as Vindolanda Fort and the iconic Housesteads. Hadrian’s Cycleway is a unique combination of athletic challenge and cultural discovery, where every pedal stroke is a journey into the past.

The northernmost border of the Roman Empire in the British Isles was secured against the Celtic tribes by a massive structure: Hadrian's Wall, built in the 120s. An episode of the television series "Treasures of the Roman Empire" on German television (ZDF) is dedicated to this 117-kilometer-long border fortification. The film (available only in German) can be accessed via the following link in the ZDF media library =>> zdf.de/dokumentation/zdfinfo-doku/schaetze-des-roemischen-reichs--der-hadrianswall-100.html

Start of Hadrian's Cycleway cycle path towards Newcastle. Just further into town there is a bicycle-friendly café where you can stop for a coffee, food and service.

The cycle path itself is part of national cycle route number 72 and the simplest connection between Newcastle and the ferry port to IJmuiden and Amsterdam or simply the North Sea coast at Tynemouth. The cycle path is not tidy everywhere, so beware of broken glass, but it is quiet, car-free and relatively green.

A nice detail is Wall's End, where Hadrian's Wall once began at a Roman fort. Hadrian's Wall is a former defensive wall of the Roman emperor of the same name.
