Continuation of the MU Cycling Tour #2: City Expansion (with accompanying booklet)

From "Alte Utting," we head east to Isartalstraße, where we turn left. After a short while, we reach Roecklplatz in the Dreimühlenviertel. The Glockenbach and Dreimühlenviertel districts are characterized not only by commercial businesses, but also by industrial settlements that utilized hydropower. The glove maker Jakob Roeckl built a factory on the Isar River in 1870. Josef Rodenstock founded an optical factory here in the early 1880s. It is still the company's headquarters today. Roecklplatz opposite is a popular meeting place, especially for Munich's youngest residents, thanks to its beautiful playground under mature trees. This small, tranquil square is an asset to the densely built-up area.

INSIDER: The "Roecklplatz" is a training restaurant with excellent food. It offers young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to pursue highly qualified training in the hospitality industry.

From here, the cycle path along the Isar River leads either north or south, offering "free travel" on this 300km stretch. It runs from the river's source in the Karwendel Mountains through the Tölzer Land region and the Bavarian capital of Munich, heading north to its confluence with the Danube.

Just around the corner, the Roeckl family opened a leather tannery (on the large city stream) and glove making factory in the third wave of expansion in the mid to late 19th century. The buildings were completely destroyed in the Second World War - apart from one outer wall.
The bowl fountain donated by the Röckel family across the street was preserved and still stands there today. He certainly contributed to the people of Munich calling the corner “Röcklschloss” at the time.
Production was moved to Romania at the end of the last century, but the administration is still based here.

Also at Roecklplatz is the - recommended - training center "Roeckls", a restaurant and social project for youth development. The aim is to enable young adults with starting difficulties to receive training in gadtronomy. Everyone benefits from this - the trainees who can then actually gain a foothold in the primary labor market - and the guests who can enjoy a dedicated and sometimes original cuisine.
