Heirbeeksluis, a place with history.
Heir refers to 'lord', i.e. the brook of the lord. The stream belonged to the lord and if you wanted to transport anything over it you had to pay for it. At the end of the stream there was a lock to prevent too much Scheldt water from washing into the stream and causing flooding or rewetting.
Heirbeek was not the only name of that spacious stream that flowed up to 15 km into the country. They were also called 'the Barbierbeek', a distortion of 'bart' or 'bord' which meant wooden plank and 'bure' for shed; a wooden shed on the Barbierbeek.
