With the Leaning Tower, 'locals' refer to the church (tower) of Schelle, one of the local sights that is actually somewhat crooked, even after work, and no one really knows why. However, the church has more in store than that. The bridge also forms a transition between Hemiksem (where you will find the abbey) and Schelle. It runs over what remains of the Vliet, once an important, navigable watercourse with busy shipping, as can be seen in a painting by Jan Brueghel the Elder, which prominently depicts the so-called Benedenvliet.
