Sonnema Berenburg is from Friesland. This Frisian herbal bitter was invented in 1860 by Fedde Sonnema from Dokkum, Friesland. The company grew quickly and then settled in Bolsward.

This herb mixture originates from Hendrik Beerenburg from Amsterdam. The skippers took it to Friesland. In Dokkum, Sonnema supplemented the mixture with his own herbs. The recipe is still a secret. So the name Berenburg is originally NOT Frisian.
