The connecting rampart between two bastions is called the Courtine. Dokkum's ramparts form a beautiful green ring around the city center, where residents enjoy strolling.

The Parksterbolwerk clearly shows that the fortifications were built after they lost their military function. This was necessary because the city became overcrowded in the course of the 19th century and almost burst at the seams. The Stadt Dockum then only had territory within the strongholds. Around 1865 there were more than 4600 people living in (and on) the strongholds, now there are more than 12oo inner-city residents. It was not until around 1915 that Dokkum was given territory outside the city canals. More info: dokkum.nl/parksterbolwerk
