If you want to experience a historic city, then Dokkum is the perfect destination. In Frisian, "smûk" means beautiful, well-maintained, and not too big. The ramparts, the Admiralty, the canals with their magnificent buildings, the Boniface Chapel, the Ice Fountain, the hotel that welcomed its first guests in 1584, and the charming shopping streets, terraces, and breweries—it's a wonderful place to land! And the beautiful and diverse surroundings of the Wadden and Woodlands are a bonus.
Dokkum's history begins in the year 754 with the robbery and murder of missionary Boniface and his 52 companions. Not a particularly beautiful beginning, but an event that has given Dokkum an indelible place in history to this day.
