The Naafbachtal northeast of Lohmar and south of Overath is a diversely structured, natural stream valley system with wet grassland areas in the floodplain, alder floodplain forests and alder riparian trees accompanying the stream, as well as extensive beech forests on the valley slopes.
The valley floodplain is mainly used as grassland: wet meadows with spring meadows, wet pastures rich in rushes, fallow wet grassland with tall herbaceous meadows, large sedge meadows and forest corn swamps, as well as hay meadows rich in primroses and species-rich, lean pastures on dry slopes, forming a varied grassland mosaic.
The picturesque, natural meandering Naafbach is accompanied by tall perennials, reeds and alder and ash forests. Isolated ponds were created in the floodplain, some of which have silted up, others are used extensively, but some are also intensively managed. In addition to the beech forests, oak and hornbeam forests take up the largest proportion of the area on the partly steep slopes. In addition, small areas of birch-oak forests, oak forests with mixed pine and spruce forests can be found. Numerous side streams of the Naafbach, some of which are deeply indented, arise in the hillside forests.
This site mosaic offers good living opportunities for various rare bird species of the Birds Directive, such as the kingfisher, the red kite, the red-backed shrike and several species of woodpeckers. The natural stream is a habitat for the bullhead and the stream lamprey as well as a stocking stream as part of the salmon reintroduction program.

The Naafbach valley is a popular recreational area, as the Naafbach was actually supposed to be dammed to form a reservoir. There have been plans for this since the 1930s, which is why no large businesses have settled there since then and hardly any new development areas have been designated. In 1980 it all came to an end - the Naafbach valley was declared a nature reserve.
