Best Hiking Routes to Bertholdsburg Castle

Tips

  • Bertholdsburg Castle is an early modern castle in the town of Schleusingen in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia. It is located on the western edge of the old town above the confluence of the Alder and Nahe rivers. The castle was named after Berthold VII, the most important member of the Henneberg family. The castle complex was built from 1226 to 1232 by the Counts of Henneberg. Under Wilhelm VI. the complex got its present-day renaissance appearance around 1500. Bertholdsburg Castle has been a museum since 1934. Initially it only comprised regional historical collections with around 3,000 exhibits from the history of southern Thuringia, Henneberg and the city of Schleusingen today.
The Natural History Museum was founded in 1988 and comprises around 100,000 exhibits. These include fossils, minerals, bone finds and the like. The development of Thuringia in the different phases of the earth's history is documented. The museum was completely redesigned in 2000 and is one of the most modern in Thuringia. • At the confluence of the Erle and Nahe, in the middle of the small medieval town of Schleusingen, stands the mighty Bertholdsburg Castle. From the 13th century onwards it served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Henneberg and is the oldest residential castle in Thuringia. In the 15th and 16th centuries the fortified castle was converted into an early modern castle in the Renaissance style. Today the castle houses the Natural History Museum. The 40-metre-high main tower offers a picturesque view of the southern foothills of the Thuringian Forest.
