The St. Nicholas Church in Bergkirchen is in a wonderful location in the Wiehengebirge. The first church was there 1,200 years ago. The current building dates from 1756. The community center is only about 300 meters away.
The Bergkirchen community currently has around 2,500 members.

The church of St. Nikolaus is not only the origin of the town of Bergkirchen. Charlemagne is said to have founded the first church here, on a pass road over the Wiehengebirge, in place of a Saxon sanctuary, and Pope Leo dedicated it to St. Nicholas 1200 years ago. The current church building dates from 1756.

The Nikolauskirche forms the start and end point of the "Nikolausweg" pilgrimage route, which connects two Nikolaus churches in this region. Unfortunately, the church cannot be visited, but exploring the historic cemetery and the Wittekind spring below is worth a visit.
