The obelisk, made of Stockholm granite, was erected in 1800, according to other sources in 1799,[1] based on a design by Louis Jean Desprez and commemorates the Swedish-Russian War of 1788 to 1790. The obelisk was erected to thank the citizens for their support. It is 22 metres high and was assembled from several parts. The decision to build the obelisk was made on 27 January 1792 by King Gustav III.
