The bay was named in 1792 in memory of the British expedition under George Vancouver with the Spanish expedition under Dionisio Alcalá Galiano and Cayetano Valdés y Flores in 1792.

English Bay Beach is just off the West End and is the most popular beach near the city center. Other beaches on the east shore are Sunset Beach, Second Beach and Third Beach. Kitsilano Beach, Jericho Beach, Spanish Bank and Locarno Beach are located on the south bank.

English Bay is the scene of many cultural events. The Celebration of Light is a world-renowned fireworks competition that takes place every summer for two weeks (usually the last week of July and the first week of August). On New Year's Day the Polar Bear Swim takes place.

English Bay Beach, also called First Beach, located along Beach Ave between Gilford St and Bidwell St, is the most populated beach area in Vancouver's downtown area. The Stanley Park Seawall, a popular running and biking route, runs along the east side of the beach.
