After the steamboat Beaver hit Prospect Point in July 1888 and sank, the first light was installed at Prospect Point a short time later to prevent further accidents. It was a white beacon housed in a lantern room on the roof of the Warden's apartment.
Today's Prospect Point Lighthouse was built in 1948.
