The city already had a city wall in Roman times.
In the Middle Ages, in the 9th/10th centuries, Ladenburg received a second, and around 1200, a third, expanded city wall.

In addition to the remaining sections of this city wall, the Martinstor (St. Martin's Gate), the Hexenturm (Witches' Tower), and parts of the Pfaffenturm (Clerk's Tower) are still special features and tourist attractions of the city.

Three growth rings can still be identified today, extending westward and eastward from the Bischofshof (Bishop's Court): The oldest early medieval settlement core is enclosed by Nagelschmiedgasse and Neugasse, while the second ring is formed by Cronbergergasse and Metzgergasse. The oval outline of the third growth ring of the Carolingian-Ottonian city center, with Kirchenstraße, Färbergasse, and Mühlgasse, is still clearly visible in the city plan today.
