The Principia Museum was built on the site of the headquarters of the 13th Roman Legion Gemina in the Roman settlement of Apulum. Between 101 and 106, Emperor Trajan conquered Dacia. He created a Roman province in the defeated land and had the Apulum fort built to secure it. His successor, Hadrian, stabilized the region. Dacia remained a Roman province until it was abandoned by Emperor Aurelian around 270. The Principia Museum's exhibition provides information about the Roman period in Alba Iulia.

The Principia Museum contains the foundations of the Roman camp where the XIII Gemina Legion was once stationed. Apulum was built during Trajan's Dacian Wars at the beginning of the 2nd century AD and was a strong fortress on the northern border of the empire.
The museum contains statues of Trajan, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, Septimius Severus and Caracalla, among others.
