The University of December 1, 1918 (Universitatea "1 Decembrie 1918") was founded in 1991. It has five faculties. The university is located in the late 19th-century neoclassical building of the former Roman Catholic "Gustav Majlath" Gymnasium, which belongs to the Archdiocese of Alba Iulia. The building was built on the site of the former church of the Augustinian monks, an imposing Gothic structure that was demolished in 1898.
