The imposing, slate-roofed building was designed by Ludwig Dihm, master builder of St. Katharinen, in the Franconian half-timbered style and completed in 1893 as the first of the three buildings dominating Vierradener Platz. This building is a typical example of the so-called Heimatstil (homeland style), which was popular around 1900. The upper floors and gable fields were constructed in show half-timbering, meaning that the once load-bearing structure served only as a decorative element.
